Decentralized renewable energy for rural electrification

Indonesia is on track to achieve universal access to electricity by 2020.The NEXSTEP analysis compares the cost of connection by three methods – grid extension, mini-grid electrification and off-grid renewable energy systems. Based on the least-cost electrification option for rural electrification, Indonesia should focus on connecting remote rural populations by off-grid solar home systems with battery storage. The implementation of off-grid solar home systems with battery energy storage electrification programme will cost the Government of Indonesia IDR 16.63 trillion (US$1.17 billion). This cost can be further decreased by sourcing local equipment and, at the same time, creating new job opportunities.
